Use of the Carbon Neutral logo

Business has come to recognise that environmental concerns may be translated into a market advantage for certain products and services and therefore various environmental declarations, claims, labels or logos have emerged on products and services in the market place. Without guiding standards and investigation by an independent third party, consumers may not be certain that a labelled product or service is a truly environmentally preferable alternative. This concern with credibility and impartiality has led to the formation of organisations providing third-party, transparent and impartial labelling.

The Carbon Neutral logo is a single-attribute, voluntary type eco-label, sponsored by the Carbon Protocol of South Africa. This logo is awarded to products, processes or organisations that wish to support and raise the serious issue of carbon reduction.

The logo can be awarded in two instances and aims to indicate which businesses have taken significant steps in quantifying and then reducing their products, processes’ or company’s greenhouse gas emissions, or to businesses and/or organisations that offset their operational greenhouse gas emissions annually.

Operational – Quantifying and then reducing or offsetting their Operational Green House Gas Emissions as required by the Green House Gas Protocol to zero over the preceding 12 months. It is awarded annually to a whole or part of an organisation that has offset or reduced their operational Green House Gas Emissions to zero. The business or organisation must have quantified their emissions in accordance with the Green House Gas Protocol and then must have reduced or offset their Scope 1 and 2 emissions to zero over the last 12 months from date of issues of the Carbon Protocol Carbon Neutral Approved Logo.

Products – Quantifying and then reducing or offsetting their Operational Green House Gas Emissions as required by PAS2050 to zero over the preceding 12 months. It is awarded annually to specific products within an organisation only if that product has offset or reduced Life Cycle Green House Gas Emissions to zero. The business or organisation must have quantified their emissions in accordance with PAS2050 and then must have reduced or offset their entire emissions to zero in accordance with the PAS2050 guidelines over the last 12 months from date of issues of the Carbon Protocol Carbon Neutral Approved Logo.

The carbon offset is achieved through a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide or greenhouse gasses in order to compensate for/offset an emission made elsewhere through manufacturing, processing or company activities. Offsets are then achieved through financial support of projects that reduce the emission of greenhouse gases in the short- or long-term. The Carbon Protocol of South Africa reviews these reductions- and offset projects to ensure they conform to and is verified against reputable international standards or guidelines which set out the categories or parameters for greenhouse gas emission quantification and reductions across a the product, process or service life cycle.

The aim and objective of using the logo is, as stated by the International Standardisation Organisations goal on eco-labels:

“…through communication of verifiable and accurate information that is not misleading on environmental aspects of products and services, to encourage the demand for and supply of those products and services that cause less stress on the environment, thereby stimulating the potential for market-driven continuous environmental improvement.”

The awarded logo can be used as a marketing tool in several ways, from corporate literature and corporate property (staff uniforms, mugs, mouse-mats, flags etc.), to buildings (doors, floors, walls, corporate stands, tills, till receipts, literature), websites, advertising and on product packaging.
